NEW TO COMPASS PILATES?

If you’re completely new to reformer Pilates or have some questions about what to expect, we’ve put together some FAQs to ensure you’re ready to go and making the most of your workout.

What to Expect Before Class

WILL I GET IN SHAPE DOING PILATES?
Yes, you can expect increased tone, strength and flexibility by doing Pilates. Pilates focuses on symmetry of both sides of the body and balancing motion and strength to help you achieve ease of movement that you may not have experienced before. Or as we like to say at Compass Pilates – “Move Better, Feel Better, Live Better”

WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER DONE REFORMER PILATES BEFORE?
No problem. All our classes are open level and beginner friendly. We layer each exercise offering advancements and modifications to suit all fitness levels. Please ensure if it is your first class you arrive 10-15 mins early so your instructor can show you the machine and discuss any injuries you may have.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO COMPASS PILATES CLASSES?
We recommend attending a minimum of 2-3 times per week to see both immediate and long term benefits of Pilates. If you want to further improve your body’s strength, flexibility and endurance, you can do up to 4 or 5 Pilates classes a week. It is important to follow a Pilates workout schedule that suits your lifestyle and fits in with any other activities, this will be unique to you. Talk to our team to work out the best options for you.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
Please bring a water bottle and sweat towel and grip socks. Towels, bottles and grips socks are available for purchase at the studio.

At the studio we provide you with filtered water, please bring your own (BYO) water bottle. Towels and bottles are available for purchase at the studio.

Valuables can be stored in cubby holes within the Studio during your workout. Please note all personal effects and valuables are brought into the studio at your own risk, and we do not accept responsibility nor liability for their loss or damage.

WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move without restriction. Remember on the Reformer you will be bending, standing laying and kneeling while moving both your arms and your legs around. Choose clothing that will allow you to avoid wardrobe malfunctions! Keep jewellery to a minimum or leave it at home. Grip socks are compulsory at our studio, and we have them available for purchase at the studio. If you need to tie your hair up we have hair elastics available for your use.

WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE?
First timers please arrive 10-15 minutes before class. This will give you time to meet your trainer, provide them with information on any injuries you may be working with and how you feel. This also gives time for a quick intro to the reformer and how it works to help you get moving when the class starts. All our classes start on time, we appreciate regulars arriving a few minutes early to allow time to store any belongings and pick a machine.

WHAT IF I AM RUNNING LATE?
We want everyone to get the most out of their workout, our classes start on time after a quick warm-up, so for your own safety there is no entry five minutes after the class has started.

CAN I BRING MY PHONE INTO CLASS?
We provide cubby holes in the studio for you to keep your personal items in a safe place during class where you, your class mates or trainer won’t trip over or break them.

We understand that sometimes you need to be contactable. If there is an emergency for which you need to keep your phone close to you please notify your pilates instructor and keep it on silent.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN’T MAKE A CLASS?
We understand there are times that you cannot make it to a class you’ve booked. Cancellations should be made online through the booking system as soon as you can to make spots available for those on the waitlist or waiting to book. The free cancellation timeframe is 6 hrs for Group Classes and 24 hours for Private classes prior to the scheduled start time. Any cancellations within less than 6 hours for Group Classes and 24 hours for Private Classes before class starts is a late cancel and you will forfeit that class, or if you are on an Unlimited Membership, or Unlimited 2 week Introductory Pass, you will be charged a cancellation fee of $15. If you don’t show up to a booked class and haven’t cancelled, a $20 no show fee will be charged.

NOTE: Online cancellation is still required to allow someone on the waitlist to fill our spot if possible. Full details should be read in Terms and Conditions.

CAN I STILL ATTEND COMPASS CLASSES IF I AM PREGNANT?
Firstly we need to know that you have been cleared to exercise by your GP. We are able to modify exercises for those who are pregnant. So that we can do this please update your trainer on how you’re feeling and how many weeks you are before each and every class.

CAN I STILL ATTEND COMPASS CLASSES IF I HAVE AN INJURY?
Firstly please get advice from your GP on whether your injury affects your ability to participate in a Group Reformer Pilates class. Please update your trainer on any new injuries or existing injuries. We need to know that you are physically fit and able to perform the Pilates exercises without risking serious injury. If you are in any doubt please contact us for a confidential discussion prior to attending a class. We can arrange a Private Session and demonstrate modified exercises if you are unable to participate in Group classes.
